This research residency is inspired by collaborative practice, the merging of tradition with innovation and finding a common ground for different movements and music practices between the three collaborators. “The concept behind our collaboration is to find different ways in which we can connect our dance backgrounds and create a dialogue between different traditions of dance practice. Using our knowledge of contemporary dance and classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam, we are interested in finding hybrid choreographic approaches that can help develop a shared movement vocabulary” Moritz and Sara believe that a fundamental aspect of performing arts is communication. This is why they believe that collaboration can be extremely beneficial, especially when working towards the creation of hybrid choreographies that use a multitude of languages.

About ŻfinMalta AiR2024 programme

Established in 2018, the programme offers locally based dance makers a space for research and dialogue.  ŻfinMalta welcomes and presents the work of both experienced and emerging artists based in the Maltese Islands, who are currently undertaking choreographic research, to develop and explore their work further in a new context.  The ŻfinMalta programme aims to provide the time and space for focus on the creation and development of movement-based work. Beyond the presentation of our first AiR for 2024, expect presented works and research by our next artists in residence: Eve Cocks and Abigail Agius. About the first ŻfinMalta Artists in Residence for 2024

Moritz Zavan Stoeckle

Moritz’s strongest background is in classical Indian Dance Bharatanatyam. He began practising such art form in 1995 and since then he always sought ways in which he could improve his knowledge of the style. Since 2000 Moritz started performing solo Bharatantyam performances in Europe and later in India as well. In 2005 he started his career as a lighting designer in Venice. The same year he started training in contemporary dance. In 2012 Moritz was awarded the audience prize of the GD’A Veneto (Giovani Danz’ Autori) with a choreography that was mixing elements of classical Indian dance and contemporary dance. In 2018 Moritz obtained a Master in Performance Studies (Dance) at the University of Malta. This allowed him to delve deeper into the craft of choreography. Using his heterogeneous background as an inspiration, Moritz is interested in finding new approaches to develop choreographic material.
